An Opportunity to Grow as Readers and Thinkers

R16 Board of Education believes in Literacy as the Foundation for Success: We believe that comprehensive literacy skills are the fundamental building blocks for every student's academic achievement and personal growth. We are committed to fostering a culture where literacy is prioritized, celebrated, and accessible to all.

As summer approaches, we are excited to share our 2025 Summer Reading Program! At Woodland Regional High School, we believe that reading over the summer not only keeps skills sharp but also builds a strong foundation for the year ahead. Our program includes two engaging components designed to foster student choice, encourage meaningful discussion, and support Region 16’s shared literacy goals.

Part One - Grade Level Reading for All Students: To begin the 2025–2026 school year with a shared learning experience, all students will read one book from a curated list provided by the Library Media Specialist and the English Department. These texts will be explored in class through engaging lessons and assessments during the first weeks of school. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the reading before school starts so they are fully prepared to participate. Students are expected to actively engage with the text using their own system of note-taking to prepare for classroom discussions and assignments in September.

Part Two - Optional Book Talks for Extra Credit: In addition to the grade level book, students have the opportunity to read an optional book of their choice and participate in a Book Talk early in the school year. These discussions are a fun and meaningful way to share ideas, explore new perspectives, and celebrate the joy of reading. Students who participate in a Book Talk will earn extra credit in their English class. To make the most of the Book Talk, come prepared with talking points or notes to contribute to your group discussion, and be present and actively participate in the conversation on the day of the Book Talks.

Great news for readers in Region 16! This year, Woodland Regional High School's summer reading program is expanding to include our middle school students.

This means that for the first time, both Woodland Regional High School and Long River Middle School will share a unified approach to summer reading. Both programs are designed to foster a love of reading by:

  • Emphasizing student choice: You get to pick the books that interest you most!
  • Promoting engaging discussions: Get ready to share your thoughts and ideas about what you've read when school resumes in the fall.
  • Offering exciting incentives: Middle school students who participate will receive extra credit points towards their first marking period grade in ELA classes!

This expansion reflects our Shared Commitment to Literacy: Throughout Region 16, ensuring a smooth and continuous reading journey for students from middle school right through high school. Our collective efforts are all focused on supporting Region 16's district-wide literacy goal.

All of our efforts are grounded in Region 16’s district-wide literacy goal:

Region 16 will provide students with opportunities to gain a deep understanding of fiction and nonfiction texts, engage in creative and analytical writing, develop reading stamina, cultivate proficiency, and support lifelong literacy. All R16 students will increase their reading achievement by 10% as measured by our state’s SBA and SAT assessments by the end of the 2026–2027 school year.

Participating in summer reading is an important step toward achieving these goals. We thank you for your support and encourage all students to take full advantage of this opportunity to grow as readers, thinkers, and communicators.

📚☀️ Exciting News from Long River Middle School! ☀️📚

We’re thrilled to kick off our Summer Reading Program this year! Students will choose a book from a list of 13 curated titles to read over the summer and then participate in a group book discussion in the fall.

These discussions will give students a chance to share their thoughts, connect with others who read the same book, and hear different perspectives. It's a great way to build community and celebrate a love of reading!

In addition to the discussion, each student will complete a one-pager about their book and turn it in to their ELA teacher in the fall.  Students who complete their summer reading and one-pager will receive a raffle ticket to place in the prize drawing of their choice for a chance to win!

All of the books are available on SORA, Region 16’s digital library. They’re also available at both the Prospect and Beacon Falls public libraries.

More details can be found in the Summer Reading Information Presentation.

Please reach out if you have any questions or need help with Sora.
