Curriculum & Instruction
Region 16 is committed to educating students academically, socially, and emotionally to acquire the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing world. We believe in the importance of a clearly articulated and comprehensive curriculum that is constantly revised to align with National and State Core Standards.
Our curriculum is created using a “backward design process” where we examine the desired outcomes for each unit of study first. Based on these outcomes, we identify the standards that students will need to master and design assessments to measure mastery. Finally, we create the instructional plan. Each curriculum unit includes the CT Core Standards, Enduring Understandings (Big Ideas), Essential Questions, Concepts & Skills, Learning Activities & Assessments.
Our links below provide resources to help parents understand the standards and our curriculum, and ways that they can support their children in the learning process.

AI in our Classrooms
Region 16 has developed and implemented a universal AI Scale to guide the appropriate use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning across all of our schools.
Artificial intelligence tools, such as chatbots, writing assistants, and problem-solving programs, are becoming increasingly common in education and the workplace. The AI Scale provides a shared framework for teachers and students to communicate clear expectations about when and how AI tools may be used in learning activities.
This approach supports responsible and ethical use of technology while ensuring that students continue to develop independent thinking and academic skills. Students are expected to remain actively engaged in their learning and be able to explain their work, even when AI tools are permitted for assignments.
