About Our School
Community School has 5 fourth grade and 5 fifth grade classes. Our 2009–2010 enrollment is 227 students. These classes are supported by literacy and numeracy teachers and special education specialists. All students at Community School receive instruction in Art, Physical Education, Health, and Music. Students in the fourth grade are instructed in the recorder, while fifth graders have the opportunity to receive instrumental music instruction. Fifth grade students participate in the D.A.R.E. Program. D.A.R.E is an acronym for Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education. This program is taught by local police officers to our students, and provides them with information, strategies, and insights in dealing with the pressures of today’s society. A graduation follows with Geoff Fox as an annual graduation guest and speaker.
Through heterogeneously grouped classes, students in both fourth and fifth grade receive instruction in Reading and Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Students in both grades utilize the computer lab at least once a week and receive instruction in keyboarding, word-processing, and use of the Internet to gather information. Classrooms at the school are now equipped with Smart Boards which provides opportunities for advanced technology in teaching and learning. Community School encourages independent reading with instruction in the use of the library on a regular basis. Our library supports the curriculum with books, audio-visual aids, and educational periodicals.
A variety of enrichment programs enhance our student’s appreciation for the arts and literature. These programs are provided through the generous contribution of our P.T.O. The P.T.O. also contributes to the field trips of all students. To encourage community involvement our students participate in a variety of activities. These include collecting food for the local food bank, contributing clothes and toys to local needy children, and inviting our senior citizens to a Halloween parade and holiday and Spring concert and sing-along.
Our fifth graders take part in an end of the year talent show and our whole school participates in an end of the year picnic.
We also participate in "The Pennies for Patients" program sponsor by the Leukemia Society. Our fourth grades have also received awareness of recycling, and waste control and electric safety from CLP through classroom lessons sponsored by an outside agency. Several student clubs are available for those students who desire to participate. These include the yearbook and newspaper clubs. Participation in the clubs helps students develop a variety of skills and encourages good citizenship and personal responsibility. We also provide a word of the week to students and its meaning. Twice a year the students are quizzed on these words and the winner receives a prize. This helps develop voc. skills for all students.
In order to motivate and recognize our students’ accomplishments we offer “Superkids” Awards for achievement in creativity, effort, behavior and improvement. . We recognize students' independent reading with the “Be A Reader Awards.”
Our goal at Community School is to have students learn in a safe learning enviroment. Our long term goal is to have all students become responsible citizens for their community.
