From the Principal's Desk
August 30, 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the Community School family.  We are happy to have you and your child here for the 2010-2011 school year.  The staff and I have been busy getting the building, classrooms and learning environment ready for the new school year.

A reminder that the entire first week of school are full day sessions.  There is no school on Friday, September 3rd as our staff will be having a professional development day.  Monday, September 6th is Labor Day, so there is no school that day either.

Please note that our Meet the Teachers evening is scheduled for Thursday, September 16th, at 7:00 P.M.  Please report directly to the school gymnasium that evening.  I will be giving a brief overview of the school, planned activities, and staff introductions.  You will then go to your child’s classroom for an information session from your child’s teacher on curriculum, homework, classroom rules and procedures.  Specialists will also be available that evening.  Please note that teachers will have sign-up sheets available for you to select a time to come in for Parent/Teacher Conferences which are being held in October.  This process alleviates your having to call in for an appointment.  Please bring your personal calendar with you that night.  Conferences will be held on October 19, 20 and 21. Students will be dismissed at 1:00 P.M.  Conferences all three days will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M.

Communication between and among us is very important.  Please follow the chain of command if you have problems, questions or concerns regarding your child.  It is always best to address them with the teacher first.  If you feel the issue has not been resolved, then please contact me.  E-mail is an efficient way to communicate with me, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Please use our district wide website for all school and district information.  You can reach it by logging on to www.region16ct.org.  Once on this site, find “Schools” at the top of the page.  You will then click on “Community School” and on the left “From the Principal” to access my monthly letter.  This will be the only paper newsletter you will receive from me.  All other communication will be via the internet.  If you do not have access to a computer, please send in a note to your child’s teacher and he/she will take care of getting you a paper copy of my letter.

Your child will be bringing home a copy of the 2010-2011 Parent/Student Handbook.  I ask that you and your child read it and that you both sign and return the form indicating that you have done so.  All signature pages are due by Monday, September 13th.  Again this year we are reinforcing the Student Wellness Policy which can be found on pages 26 through 28.

I look forward to working with you and your child this year.  Remember, we are a team so we must work together to make sure your child’s needs are met.  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have at jnuzzo@region16ct.org or call the school at 203-758-6674 and leave a message with the secretaries or in my voicemail.  I will answer all e-mails and phone calls within twenty-four hours unless it is an emergency, so please be patient.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Nuzzo

Principal
