About Our School

Algonquin School enrolls approximately approximately 500 students in grades PLSC-3. These students have a rich and varied program which includes classroom and small-group enrichment. Support services in reading and mathematics are provided for identified students. Students receive instruction in Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies as well as instruction in Art, Physical Education, and Music.

We enjoy supporting our academic programs with a wide variety of very successful and well loved activities such as: “Bag of Books”; Family Math and Reading Nights; student “Authors’ Teas”; visits from local authors; PTO Book Fairs; Family Reading Days; CT Loves to Read Day; Dr. Seuss’ Birthday;  grade three’s annual Science Fair and visits from scientists; spring musicals; student art shows; grade one’s annual Memorial Day Parade; kite days; PTO Field Day; School Spirit Days; “Jump Rope for Heart”; Project Challenge; Math-a-thon and math bees; PTO sponsored live theater presentations; Volunteer Breakfast; food and clothing drives; book swaps; and numerous field trips.

At Algonquin we believe in the “team approach”.  Working in tandem with our students’ parents/guardians, we feel students come to realize early on that learning is very important and is most necessary for success in life!  We invite you to become an active participant in your child’s educational journey.

Our grade 3 students take the Connecticut Mastery Test in March and have performed well.  Grade 2 students take the OLSAT in November.  All students K-3 are administered timed writing prompts 2-3 times per year.  Student performance is carefully reviewed through test scores as well as daily student work.  Region 16 uses the Houghton Hifflin 2005 Language Arts Program and Pearson's EnVision Math. We are thrilled to offer these superb, successful, and totally integrated series to our students.

All Algonquin students are expected to act in a respectful and tolerant manner at all times.  To encourage this, our Guidance Counselor and Social Worker visit every classroom once a month to deliver that month’s “Character Counts” lesson.  The “theme” for the month is supported by all staff at Algonquin, and students “Caught Doing a Good Character Act” are recognized during morning announcements.

Our “team approach” continues as our most knowledgeable support staff frequently offers workshops for parents on a variety of topics --- developmental readiness, reading, math, homework tips, discipline techniques/strategies for parents, standardized test interpretation, divorce, death, student anger management, special education topics, etc.  Check out our school newsletter, “Algonquin Highlights” for information on workshops, as well as all school news!

Algonquin School is proud to announce that our extremely successful Summer Reading Program has been personally recognized twice by the Governor of the State of Connecticut.  Every student is encouraged to read at least 20 books over the summer!  We’ve broken our yearly goal many times over the years!  Needless to say, we love to read at Algonquin School!

As you can see, today’s educational scene has evolved greatly in this rapidly changing and demanding society.  Algonquin School’s mission is to help each and every student reach his/her potential, and we take this charge very seriously!

We look forward to working with you and your child as we “Reach for the Stars” and always try to “Be the Best We Can Be”!
